Tae Kwon-Do

Combined Self Defence run two types of class. We teach a traditional Tae Kwon-Do Martial Arts class, where our syllabus is split into our Junior program which is available from ages 4 – 11 and our Adult and Teen Class.

We also run an Adult only (16 Years +) Self Defence Program, which is based on the hugely poplar Jeet Kune Do, which is the name Bruce Lee originally gave to the Martial Arts system he devised.

WHAT IS TAE KWON-DO

Tae Kwon-Do is a version of an ancient form of unarmed combat practised for many centuries in the Orient. Tae Kwon-Do became perfected in its present form in Korea. Translated from Korean,

Tae

Literally means to jump, kick or smash with the foot.

Kwon

Is a fist chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand or fist.

Do

Means art, way or method.

Tae Kwon-Do indicates the technique of unarmed combat for self-defence, involving the skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks, dodges and interception with the hand, arms and feet to the rapid destruction of the opponent.

To the Korean people Tae Kwon-Do is more than a mere use of skilled movements. It also implies a way of thinking and life, particularly in instilling a concept and spirit of strict self-imposed discipline and an ideal of noble moral re-armament. In these days of violence and intimidation, which seem to plague our modern societies, Tae Kwon-Do enables the weak to possess a fine weapon to defend him or herself and defeat the opponent as well. When wrongly applied it can be a lethal weapon.

ABOUT THE (T.A.G.B.)

TAE KWON-DO ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN

The Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB) is a nationally recognised Tae Kwon-Do organisation in this country. It was formed in 1983 and has since become the founding member of the British Tae Kwon-Do Council (BTC) which is recognised by the United Kingdom Sports Council. TAGB instructors are highly qualified, accredited individuals with many years’ experience in teaching mixed classes which often include young children and disability groups. Training in Tae Kwon-Do can start at any age. We have members as young as five and recently one of our members gained his First Degree Black belt on his 70th birthday!

Because of its high-kicking, fast-paced style Tae Kwon-Do is a thoroughly modern way of getting fit. The TAGB is a great advocate of fun and fitness at an early age and TAGB instructors often work with local schools to teach Life Skills. As one of the largest martial arts organisations in the world the TAGB has 25,000 accredited members and organises seminars, demonstrations, competitions and national and international championships every month of the year.

Tae Kwon-Do training is about learning to discipline your mind as well as your body and TAGB instructors always include elements in their teaching which help their students to develop mentally as well as physically.

With clubs throughout the country the TAGB is the ideal organisation for learning a martial art that has evolved through a 3,000 year history to become the newest Olympic sport.

Tae Kwon-Do will improve your fitness, flexibility and most of all your confidence and self discipline. Right from the first lesson you will start developing a whole new range of skills and capabilities with the opportunity to realise self achievement.

Tae Kwon-do is safe, practical and most of all enjoyable.

FAQ’s

You may have some questions regarding training with us. Please see our Frequently asked questions below and should you find your question isn’t answered, just drop us an e-mail!

Do you offer a FREE lesson?

YES we offer all prospective students a month’s FREE training.

Most Martial Art or Self Defence schools offer one FREE lesson. How can you decide if you like the class and it suits you after just one visit. It is Important to train with people you trust. Some things to consider are Class Dynamics. Are members friendly and welcoming, do they put a priority on learning.

Is the coach/Instructor friendly, approachable, non egotistical and proficient in the delivery of the material. Too many Coaches/Instructors like to show off. Whilst the instructor showing his/her skill allows students to see what level of skill they can gain from training in your class too much of this can be boring or intimidating.

All that said. You are welcome to come and train with us for a month at no charge.

What’s the catch?

There is no catch. The month is completely FREE and there is no obligation to join if you don’t want to. We even run FREE Tae Kwon-Do sessions throughout the summer holidays for our local communities.

How many Martial Arts groups do that?

What type of clothing should I wear to my FREE lessons?

Tracksuit or shorts and tee shirt. If you wear tracksuit the trousers must not be long enough to go under the foot. That causes students to slip and is a safety hazard. You wont need any shoes as we train in bare feet. Don’t forget to bring some water in a sports bottle, no screw tops or glass please.

What Age can my children start?

This depends on the individual. This is one of the reasons there is a month’s FREE training available. Both the parent and instructor will have the time to evaluate the prospective students suitability to cope with the lesson.

Our Children’s program is available from 4 years upwards.

What’s the cost for training with you?

When you come and visit us for your first lesson we will inform you of the costs for continued membership once your FREE trial lessons are complete.

What are your Minimum Terms?

There are no minimum sign up terms. All that we ask is that you give us a months notice if you decide to leave so that we can arrange to offer that place to another prospective student.

Do you stop for School Holidays?

We train through the School Holidays. Our Martial Arts school closes for 5 weeks a year and as students all have an unlimited training package they can train at additional lessons to make up missed training if they wish.

Do you have Suits and Belts?

Yes as a traditional Martial Arts club we have suits and belts. There is a standard Organisation suit, which is provided when you enroll. There is also a range of equipment and merchandise available including a club suit and club tee shirt to choose from.

Can I take belt gradings?

We hold a regional grading every 3 months and eligible students are welcome to attend these, provided they have fulfilled the training criteria.

Junior students follow a smaller curriculum and they grade every 6 months in their normal training class.

Do I need to be fit, or be of a certain age?

No you do not need to be fit to come along. The training is generalised and you can take a break if your fitness dictates this. Our oldest member is a 50 year old female. Besides whats the point in having to get fit to join a class that you want to participate in with the aim to get fit. As you push your own abilities you will become fitter.

I am a girl what can I expect?

Women need to train with men – period. It’s great fun to train with other women, and there are great women warriors out there, but training with a variety of people, of a variety in sizes, including men will balance your training, improve your skills faster and build your confidence.

You won’t be asked to do anything you don’t want to and can take a break if you need to.

Can I come and watch?

Yes if you are seriously interested you can come and watch the class by appointment. When you get people just walking in off the street to “just have a look” it can put members off their training. It is much much better if you come and join in on your first lesson.

You won’t be asked to do anything you don’t want to and can take a break if you need to.

How long will it take me to get my black belt?

That is a million dollar question. How good do you want to get? How much time are you willing to put in to your training?
How often will you train? Will you practice at home?

One thing we can say, is that every time you leave a lesson. Whether or not you think it or believe it you will be better than you were when you turned up to start the Class.

It is possible to obtain a Black Belt in 3 1/2 Years, however around 4 is common.

Why so long?
Well you want to be good at it don’t you?

What are your Qualifications?

All TAGB school instructors are qualified by the TAGB as assistant or full instructors, hold Enhanced DBS (formely known as CRB) checks and are First Aid trained.

Do you do MMA Mixed Martial Arts?

Mixed Martial Arts is an extremely specialised sport. Most of us do not have the time to attend a gym for 5 days a week constantly working on cardio and fighting skills. There is no doubt that MMA competitors have the edge when it comes to a fight, but don’t forget competition has rules.
